Rashmi Mishra
Founder & Artistic Director, Rashmi Academy of Performing Arts (RaPa)

Rashmi Mishra is a renowned dancer, choreographer, educator, and storyteller specializing in Indian classical dance Kathak and Indian folk forms. Her dance journey began at the age of four in Agra – the city of the Taj Mahal, under the guidance of various gurus and was later shaped under the mentorship of the legendary Kathak maestro, Pt. Birju Maharaj Ji, in Delhi. Her performances reflect the elegance, expressive storytelling, fast spins, and intricate footwork characteristic of the Lucknow Gharana of Kathak.

Inspired by Indian mythology, the rhythms of nature, and the movements of everyday life, Rashmi’s choreographic work is a blend of rhythm, abhinaya (expressions), and powerful narratives. She holds a Master’s degree in Kathak and is currently pursuing her Ph.D. in Kathak, focusing on reviving the poetic works of 16th-century Ashtachhap poets and integrating them into the Kathak tradition to deepen its expressive and lyrical dimensions.

With over two decades of professional experience, Rashmi has performed on prestigious stages across India, Canada, Denmark, Dubai, and Thailand, including Nuit Blanche, Rhythms of Canada, and the International Gita Mahotsava. Her artistic contributions have earned her several accolades such as the Grow North Award by North York Arts, Best Choreographer Award in Thailand, Women’s Achievers Award, Brij Ratna Samman, and the Best Kathak Dancer Award in India.

As the Artistic Director of Rashmi Academy of Performing Arts (RaPa), she trains and mentors the next generation of artists in Kathak, Indian folk, and Bollywood dance. In 2023, she founded the North York Diwali Fest (NYDF) to bring together diverse communities through the celebration of culture, dance, and music.

Rashmi Academy of Performing Arts (RaPa)

Rashmi Academy of Performing Arts (RaPa) was founded in 2008 in Mumbai, India, by Rashmi Mishra, with a vision to preserve, promote, and pass on the rich traditions of Indian classical and folk dance. What began as a humble initiative to teach Kathak and Indian folk styles has blossomed into a vibrant cultural movement.

In 2022, RaPa established its branch in Toronto, Canada, where it continues to build community through the performing arts. RaPa offers training in Kathak, Indian folk dances, and Bollywood, and serves as a platform for both beginner and advanced learners. Students also appear for formal dance examinations and frequently perform at prestigious events across Canada and internationally.

RaPa is more than a dance school—it’s a space where students discover themselves through rhythm, expression, and cultural storytelling. Through regular classes, stage shows, and community involvement, young dancers learn discipline, confidence, leadership, and cultural appreciation.

“RaPa was created with a deep love for Indian arts and a dream to make them accessible to the next generation. It’s not just about learning steps, but about finding your story, your roots, and your voice through movement.”
